About Geenen DeKock and the West 8th Development Story

“The March to the Waterfront” has been a dream of Geenen DeKock Properties for many years, a way to connect Downtown Holland with the waterfront as so many of our neighboring cities do. In 2015 this dream moved one block closer to completion as Geenen DeKock Properties had the opportunity to purchase the property between 8th and 9th and River and Pine Avenues for a new development, the West 8th Development.

Over the next year we began the planning stages of where we wanted to take this block. Our first stage in the development was to renovate the existing Holland Sentinel building. The Holland Sentinel local newspaper continues to occupy most of the building and a portion of the building was renovated for Seventy-Six Restaurant owned by Lucas Grill (Public Restaurant in Zeeland) which opened in September 2017.

In the spring of 2017 construction started on the next building in the development, 50 West Residences. This new 4 story building will have 2 main floor tenants, Canterbury Cottage home furnishings and the Tulip Time Festival offices. 2 floors of apartments and 1 floor of condominiums will provide the urban living that many people are looking for today.

As development of the block continues, we have been striving to find those tenants that will fit our vision to enhance our already wonderful downtown with more housing, restaurant, retail and entertainment options for people to enjoy whether they are driving in or live in the downtown community.

“The March to the Waterfront” is also moving forward with the renovation of the Civic Center making the dream of connecting downtown with the waterfront that much more attainable in the future.
